“It seems,” Laurel started, “that I have the coordinates we need to go to, but only half the picture. The Supreme Leader’s side, or at least according to what I was able to get from my sister’s mind…” She took a moment, clearly still caught off guard by Leier’s death. “It seems they don’t know what happened to the Kitsune. They knew where the planet was, and that their kind had the Per-Neter. But the planet vanished at the same time as the barrier appeared, splitting the universe.”

“But you have the location?” Gale asked.

Laurel nodded and then gave her the coordinates.

“That’s a starting point,” Charm said, holding her hand out so that the metal fox darted around it, moving as if it was a coin and she was rolling it along her knuckles, although it stayed a few inches away from contact.

Eyeing her, I said, “My gut says our mascot will be of use when we’re close.”

“You might be right.” Laurel watched, too, and finally Charm stopped, meeting our gaze.

“What?” Charm asked.

“I… sense thought from it,” Laurel noted. “Not clearly, but definite thought.”

“Of course,” Charm replied. “It talks to me. Shows me things.”

This wasn’t news to me, but Aegriss and Harp shared an uneasy look while Gale said, “How’s that?”

As Charm explained what we’d seen so far, I turned to the display, taking in this small ship. It wasn’t much, compared to those of the Citadel. More like the ship we had taken from Abaddon when escaping that hellhole. After a moment, I turned to Laurel. She was staring at the wall—not even the display, just a section of the wall.

“Are you… okay?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Coming back here, I didn’t… I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t that.”

“I’m sorry.”

She attempted a smile, but instead nodded. “Betraying my people was bound to cause complications.”

I put a hand on hers and lightly squeezed. “We’re here with you.”

Her eyes met mine. Before I could pull my hand back, she took it, kissing the back of my fingers, then the front. “I know you are.”

All I could do was smile, tilt my head, and watch as she put one of my fingers in her mouth. “Er…”

“Shut up,” she said, knowing that I was likely going to say something about how we hadn’t had a chance to clean up. “I just…” She smiled and switched to thought instead of spoken communications. I want to feel comfort right now. Okay?

No complaints from me. But in that small ship, others were starting to glance over from their discussion about Charm’s pet. She seemed to be putting their worries to bed, at least.

With all of our powers, I had a thought. Could I use the same powers that turn me into a dragon to essentially be clean?

Try it, Laurel thought.

So I did, using my illusion power to make it as if I had taken a bath and dried instantly, even adding a hint of a cologne I had come across once on Earth.
